Carbon offseting is the act of paying to counteract the greenhouse gases you emit. Offsetting can be done in a number of methods. The simplest is to pay someone to remove the amount of greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere that you have emitted. While this does give you a net emission rate of zero, it is not the best way to use offsets, as you will have to pay someone to do this forever, and excess greenhouse gasses still enter the atmosphere.

Instead, if these offsets are used to make an improvement that not only remove your greenhouse gasses, but will also buld the infrastructure that will let you produce less greenhouse gas in the first place.
